Whilst mixed with surreal sequences, I believe Dexter Fletcher's Rocketman and Danny Boyle's Trainspotting portray drug use most effectively by manipulating time, juxtaposing shots and forcing perspective. Doing so forces us to empathise with the characters, ultimately creating these great visceral moments which place the audience in the characters' shoes. These editing techniques makes the story of each film hit much harder, as rather than just seeing what the character sees, we feel every hit, every emotional impact and every problem they face.
