Who am I? is a real question especially if we feel inwardly conflicted. In a world that values authenticity, knowing yourself is important.

Shri Shantananda Sarasvati (1913-1997) was a leading exponent of advaita philosophy, the philosophy of non-dualism; he was also an outstanding teacher whose wisdom has enriched many lives His title was shankaracharya, a teacher of the the school of Shankara.

Christine Lambie presents a quote from the book: 'Good Company: Sayings, Stories, Answers' which is an anthology of answers from Shantananda Sarasvati.

He says: "If you begin to be what you are, you will realise everything, but to begin to be what you are, you must come out of what you are not.You are not those thoughts which are turning, turning in your mind; you are not those changing feelings...You are not the different decisions you make and the different wills you have; you are not that separate ego.

"Well then, what are you? You will find when you have come out of what you are not, that the ripple on the water is whispering to you ‘I am That’, the birds in the trees are singing to you ‘I am That’, the moon and the stars are shining beacons to you ’I am That’. You are in everything in the world and everything in the world is reflected in you, and at the same time you are That – everything."


The School of Philosophy and Economic Science offers courses in practical philosophy and economics with justice as well as other subjects. It aims to approach philosophy in a practical way, encouraging students to apply philosophy in their lives. The School also introduces a mindfulness-type exercise leading eventually to mantra meditation.
