The Porsche 911, known for its iconic status in the sports car world, is undergoing significant updates for its 2025 iteration, the 992.2 model. These updates focus heavily on engine advancements and the introduction of a hybrid powertrain.

The 911 lineup will see a new 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine. While the twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six will continue in the Carrera and Carrera S, The new 3.6-liter naturally aspirated engine will replace the current 3.0-liter turbo engines in the GTS models and will also be adopted in the GT3 models, albeit at a later stage. The Turbo and Turbo S models are also set for an upgrade, shifting from their current 3.8-liter engines to more advanced twin-turbo 3.6-liter engines. This move aims to enhance performance while also meeting stricter emission standards.

A major highlight of the update is the introduction of a hybrid powertrain, which is not a plug-in type but charges as the car is driven. This T-HEV system includes a 2.0 kWh battery and an electric motor capable of generating an additional 80-90 horsepower. The electric motor will be positioned under the fuel tank, improving the car's weight distribution and front-wheel propulsion. The hybrid system will be centered around a modified twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six engine, projected to deliver 395 hp and 347 lb-ft of torque. When combined with the electric motor, the total output is expected to be around 478 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque.

Looking ahead, Porsche is planning even more powerful hybrid systems, including a speculated GT2 RS model with a hybrid setup, potentially surpassing 800 hp. While there were initial plans for an electric 911 model around 2028, this has been postponed to the early 2030.

These updates mark a significant step for Porsche in balancing performance enhancements with environmental considerations, ensuring the 911 remains a key player in the sports car market.
