Following the many deprivations of World War II, postwar demand was quickly growing for convertible sports cars as people were looking to once again enjoy the finer things in life. Designed to be America’s Sports Car, the Chevrolet Corvette made its debut at the 1953 Motorama as a show car, but interest and demand quickly led to GM fast-tracking it for limited production. First offered in the latter half of 1953, the Corvette came with a 235 CI inline 6-cylinder engine, but by 1955, that was replaced with a 265 CI small-block V-8. Over the course of the nine years the first generation of the Chevrolet Corvette was produced, it received a steady stream of upgrades and design improvements, not the least of which being ever more powerful engine options.

This 1955 Corvette is one of only 700 Chevrolet Corvette convertibles produced for the third model year of America’s Sports Car. Finished in Corvette Copper over a dark Beige interior, it is one of only 15 painted in that rare color choice, which was the rarest Corvette color option that year. With 1955 also being the first year that Corvettes were offered with a V-8 engine, this striking Corvette comes equipped with the 265 CI V-8 engine that produces 195 HP and is mated to a Powerglide automatic transmission.

Inside, this lovely convertible’s dark Beige interior is complemented by a signal-seeking Wonderbar AM radio, courtesy lights, directional signals and a heater, while other desirable features include windshield washers, full-size spinner wheel covers, whitewall tires and a parking brake alarm. Built in July 1955, this 1955 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster is a stunning, early piece of Corvette history.
