The shoreline of Da Nang is a magnificent sight, full of captivating stories just waiting to be discovered in addition to amazing scenery. I always manage to find time for my hobbies, which include yoga, working out, and discovering Da Nang's hidden treasures, even with my hectic schedule.

Situated at the foot of the Hai Van Pass, Nan O Beach is a well-kept secret that most local surfers are only aware of. My curiosity prompted me to learn more about this hidden gem's past when I first heard about it from the surfing community.

What I found was incredible. This particular beach saw a historic event occur on March 8, 1965, at 8:15 a.m.: the landing of the first combat Marines in Vietnam. This place was barely more than a tiny fishing village at the time. It was once called "beautiful Vietnam" by a Marine, who spoke of the unending rice paddies and charming towns surrounded by palm and bamboo trees. This conflicted beauty is a potent reminder of the paradoxes in life.

This beach's history opened my eyes to the intricacy of life, but it also showed me how great a surf break it might be. Here, the waves wash off the peninsula into a surfer's paradise when the conditions are exactly right for surfing.

Next to Nan O Beach are the well-known Marble Mountains, which are a popular tourist destination in and of themselves. The way this neighborhood has been turned into a resort while keeping abandoned buildings that are remnants of its past is fascinating.

I had the honor of speaking with Hoa, who has been running the original guesthouse for almost thirty years, during one of my visits. His tales from the '60s and '70s offered a vivid window into life on these shores in bygone times. The peaceful atmosphere I was in contrasted sharply with his stories. Hoa's stories, which include him shooting a.50 caliber rifle at the age of nine and performing risky rescues and the friendships he made, are a shining example of the human spirit of assisting one another beyond time and distance.

Hoa was still telling me stories when he gave me a scrapbook. I was urged to turn any page, and when I did, I discovered a wealth of memories. Each page had images and messages from those who had explored this hidden gem over the years.

I was especially drawn to one page that told the tale of Sarah and Clyde. Two decades after their initial visit in 1997, they came back with their child. It's amazing how this beach witnessed their milestones and formed a part of their life story.
