But before you make a Will, it is important to understand the assets you can give away in a Will, and those you cannot.

Many of us may own assets that do not form part of our estate which are known as "non-estate assets". Where non-estate assets are concerned, the law decides how these assets are managed and distributed, regardless whether you have a will and regardless of what you say in your will.

Non-estate assets may include the following:
1. Assets held as joint tenants (e.g. real estate, joint bank accounts, joint investments)
2. Central Provident Fund (CPF) monies
3. Insurance trust policies of which the deceased was the trustee

You may need to make additional arrangements to ensure that you have effective estate planning measures in place for these assets.
