The Battle of the Bulge was a major World War II battle fought between Allied and Axis forces in the Ardennes forest region of eastern Belgium and northern Luxembourg from December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945. The battle was the last major German offensive campaign of the war and the largest battle fought by the United States Army during World War II.
The German offensive, which was launched in the early morning hours of December 16, 1944, caught the Allied forces by surprise and initially caused significant gains for the Germans. The Germans hoped to split the Allied forces, seize the port of Antwerp, and force the Allies to negotiate a peace treaty.
The battle was fought in harsh winter conditions, with the Allied forces struggling to defend against the German onslaught. However, the tide of the battle turned in favor of the Allies as reinforcements arrived and the weather improved, allowing the Allies to launch counterattacks against the Germans.
The Battle of the Bulge was a costly battle for both sides. The Germans suffered heavy losses in men and equipment, while the Allies suffered over 80,000 casualties, including 19,000 killed.
Ultimately, the Battle of the Bulge marked a major turning point in the war. The German offensive failed to achieve its objectives, and the German military was left severely weakened and unable to mount any further large-scale offensives. The Allies were able to regain the initiative and begin their final advance towards Germany.
