Shigeru Mizuki (1922-2015) was a master of Japanese YOUKAI manga and a leading YOUKAI researcher. He collected occult folklore from around the world and expressed it in his paintings.
The Japanese word YOUKAI has encompassing concepts of "ghost," "monster," "demon," "spirit," "mythical creature," and "supernatural being." It's scary, cute, and sublime.
KITAROU, the main character of the manga ``GeGeGe no Kitaro'', is a monster in the form of a boy, and he exterminates monsters that appear in the human world and do evil. The TV anime has been aired in six different versions from 1968 to 2020. The newer versions have a stronger story about Kitarō exterminating evil monsters, about good and punishing evil, but in the older versions, Kitaro observes the stupidity of humans and the unreasonableness of human society from a YOUKAI perspective. It was meant to be humorously highlighting the absurdity of human behavior. Modern people have the worldview of modern people, animals have the worldview of animals, and monsters have the worldview of monsters. We cannot get out of the matrix of those worldviews. Kitaro provides a yokai's perspective to humans who are blinded by such a narrow and narrow world view and value system, and suggests that things are strange.
