In a significant development amid escalating tensions, negotiators from both sides have convened in Cairo.
Groups from Israel and Hamas came to Cairo on Tuesday to talk about stopping the fight. This happened just after Israeli tanks and soldiers went into Rafah, a city in Gaza, and took control of the border with Egypt. They stopped aid from coming into Gaza.
Israel brushed off urgent warnings from close allies and moved into the southern city even as cease-fire negotiations with Hamas remained on a knife’s edge.
The UN said that if Rafah and the main crossing into Gaza, Kerem Shalom, stay closed, aid to Palestinians could stop. This is happening when officials say there is already a big hunger problem in the northern part of Gaza.
The situation between Israel and Hamas has been changing quickly. After some back and forth, Hamas said on Monday that it agreed to a cease-fire deal mediated by Egypt and Qatar. However, Israel said it didn't agree with some key parts of the deal. Later, Israeli forces moved into Gaza, taking control of the Rafah Crossing.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is under pressure from the United States and other allies to agree to a cease-fire, said that while he had sent a delegation back to the talks, “in tandem, we continue waging the war on Hamas.
The Israeli military went into the city to break down buildings and things that Hamas uses to plan attacks. This happened after an attack over the weekend where four Israeli soldiers were killed near another border crossing from Israel into Gaza.
Israel didn't fully invade Rafah as it had been warning. Instead, it was a targeted operation by the Israeli military to fight against terrorism. They called it a very precise action.
As the world watches closely, all eyes are on Cairo, where the fate of millions hangs in the balance.
