This short video tutorial walks you through the process of drawing a field sketch of a broad road cut exposure of river channel sandstone, over-bank mudstone, and coal deposits in the Ferron Sandstone of east-central Utah. The geology discussed in this exercise is fictitious and meant only for illustrative purposes. In particular, this video touches on how to use simple lines, patterns, and annotations to capture the relationships among a sequence of sedimentary strata comprising three different rock types within the context of Kurt’s five essentials of a good field sketch:
1. Upper limit / horizon line
2. Lower limit
3. Compass references
4. Scale bar
5. Caption
