Laozi (/ˈlaʊdzə/, Chinese: 老子), is known by multiple other names such as Lao Tzu or Tzŭ, Lao-tzu, Lao Tse or Lao-tse, Lao Tsu, and Lao-tsu, is an ancient Chinese Taoist philosopher. Many historians believe he existed between the 6th and 4th century BC during China's Spring and Autumn Period and served as the royal archivist for the Zhou court at Wangcheng (modern Luoyang). Laozi is considered by many researchers of Chinese philosophy scholars as the founder of philosophical and religious Taoism.

Laozi is credited by researchers as the author of the Tao Te Ching, though the identity of its author(s) or compiler(s) has been debated throughout history. The Tao Te Ching often called simply Laozi after its reputed author, describes the Tao as the source and ideal of all existence: it is unseen, but not transcendent, immensely powerful yet supremely humble, being the root of all things.
