In The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, Simba and Nala have a daughter named Kiara. Kiara is adventurous and curious, and she often wanders off into the Pride Lands. One day, Kiara meets a young lion named Kovu, who is the son of Zira - a banished lioness. Zira is angry at Simba for exiling her and her family, and she wants revenge. Kovu and Kiara fall in love, but they are forbidden to be together. As Kiara grows older, she realizes that she must fight for what she believes in. She decides to challenge her father's decision to banish Kovu, and she succeeds in convincing him to let Kovu back into the Pride Lands. Kiara and Kovu get married and start a new generation of lions in the Pride Lands.

he sequel will be an original story, and not a remake of The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, the 1998 direct-to-video sequel to the original film, from what can be inferred from the Deadline article.
This will be either the fifth sequel to a live-action Disney remake, following 102 Dalmatians, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, sequel to The Jungle Book, sequel to Aladdin and sequel to Mulan, which may come before or after this.
