Theres been an age old debate regarding what makes a drum set sound good. Some argue that it's the shells, other say it's the bearing edges, some say it's the heads, and the list goes on. I would say that most of sound comes from the heads just because its whats actually resonating and producing the sound. Another thing you'll hear a lot is that with nice heads you can make even the cheapest drum set sound good. Which I totally agree with! Typically the stock heads on a cheap drum set don't sound the best, plus they don't last very long and get dented pretty quick. Put on a fresh set of Remo or Evans drum heads and the cheap drum set now sounds worlds better! Okay, but what happens when you put a set of cheap heads on a nice drum set? Do they all of a sudden sound like a cheap drum set? Or do the nice shells, bearing edges, etc. save the sound? Thats exactly what I wanted to find out in this comparison! The $4,000 drum kit in this test is a DW Collectors Maple with a Ludwig Classic snare and the cheap drum kit is a $400 drum set you can find on Amazon made by Eastar. The cheap heads from the Eastar were used on the DW and a set of Remos were put onto the Easter.
