I bought a Fir 4x8 from Home Depot and carved it into a bench with an angle grinder. This DIY bench took me about 6 hours of labor and only required a few basic power tools. A 4x8 is 3-1/2" inches by 7-1/4" inches and this one was 8 feet long. These are common at west coast home depots but I rarely saw them on the east coast when I was in Boston. They should be available at any lumber yard that supplies lumber for framing. houses. I picked through quite a few to find this one which has really nice tight grain.

I used a Holey Galahad Tungsten Carbide Disc for Woodworking, Shaping, and Smoothing for removing the majority of the wood. This is a very fast and easy way to power carve wood.
