Russia's invasion of Ukraine has prompted more countries to want to join NATO, an increase in defense expenditures across the alliance and unified the organization in a way they haven't been in a long time. I don't think that was part of Putin's plan when he moved into eastern Ukraine and Crimea in 2014, but at this point it's pretty clear the impact that decision had on the alliance.
