The Sultan of Brunei has a net worth of about $20 billion, but he was once worth $40 billion. His excessive spending and lavish lifestyle are the stuff of legend, and he lives in the world’s largest and most extravagant palace. Istana Nurul Iman is a $1.5 billion grand palace with 1,178 rooms and 257 bathrooms. The interior is adorned with gold-woven carpet, diamond fixtures, rare Italian marble, and the finest silks from China. The Sultan of Brunei also owns a number of luxurious properties outside of Brunei. Through the Brunei Investment Agency, the Sultan owns the Dorchester Hotel in London, the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles County, Le Meurice in Paris, and Hotel Eden in Rome. There are more than 7,000 vehicles in the Sultan’s garage, and his entire car collection is believed to be worth about $6.4 billion. The Sultan has a 500-car fleet of Rolls Royces, including a $14 million gold-pleated Silver Spur II Limo that’s used for ceremonies and special occasions. His $600,000 Rolls Royce Phantom VI was custom-made to his specifications, and his $14 million Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental, nicknamed the Star of India, is one of the most expensive cars ever sold at auction.
