In 1992, Jan Koum, a Ukrainian immigrant laborer seeking a better life, immigrated to the US. While attending San Jose University, he self-taught computer networking and worked at Ernst & Young. He was then chosen to work at Yahoo. While perusing the AppStore in 2009, he had the concept for WhatsApp, and his friend Brian Acton joined forces with $250,000 in initial money. The most popular app in India is WhatsApp, which expanded naturally by adding millions of users without any advertising or marketing. Jan signed the contract for the $19 billion acquisition of WhatsApp by Facebook in 2014 while waiting in line for food stamps with his mother.
