It is hard to deny the fact that the Toyota 4Runner has been one of the most charming SUVs on the road. I mean, it is capable, it is bulletproof, and most importantly, it looks pretty cool. Ever since it entered production in 2009, it has been growing and changing into something even better. And now, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner is an entirely new SUV. It comes with new powertrains, a new platform, and a new and redefined design. This will be a great improvement from the current 4Runner, which its competitors mostly beat regarding fuel economy, ride and handling, technology, and powertrains. So, what’s new with the 2024 Toyota 4Runner? Let’s find out, shall we?

Being in its 14th production year, the 5th generation of the Toyota 4runner is still among the top best-selling models in American markets as far as mid-size SUVs go. And even though it is not as popular as the family-focused Toyota Highlander when it comes to unit sales, the 4Runner has held its ground against some of the other rugged mid-size SUVs such as the Ford Bronco and the Jeep Wrangler. However, just as the competition is being updated with time, Toyota cannot hope for this overextended 4runner generation to remain as popular as it was at its beginning.
The good news is that the 6th generation of the 4Runner might just be coming soon. In 2019, 2021, and 2022, Toyota released the all-new Highlander, Tundra, and Sequoia in that respective order. In addition to that, Toyota USA recently released a teaser for the 2024 Tacoma on Instagram. So, if you consider all these recent developments that Toyota is making to their pickup trucks and SUVs, we can as well assume that a 2024 Toyota 4Runner redesign is on the way.
Many industry insiders and fans alike expect to hear the official news about the 2024 Toyota 4Runner by late 2023. There seems to be a lot of secrecy surrounding the next-generation SUV. But could Toyota actually be making plans to launch a 4Runner unlike any other? A lot of 4Runner fans are hoping so. And with some of these changes, Toyota might actually keep their competition on their toes.
First of all, Toyota is giving the 2024 4Runner a completely fresh exterior design. The current 4Runner has only had one exterior facelift, which was in 2013. And since then, all succeeding model years, new trims, and special editions have all used the same exterior design.
We can expect the 2024 Toyota 4Runner to have a front fascia design that is similar to those on the current Sequoia and Highlander but with a more rugged treatment. This seems more suited to the 4Runner’s character. The 2024 Toyota 4Runner’s trail-bred nature will be mostly emphasized by the horizontally oriented hexagonal grill with an aggressive LED headlamp design, multiple air dams, and an extended lower bumper lip. At the rear, we can expect to see the 4Runner borrow the tailgate and lighting design ideas from the 2023 Sequoia.
When we go under the hood, the 2024 4runner will also get a new turbocharged engine. The 2023 Toyota 4Runner uses the same 4.0-liter 1GR-FE V6 engine that was introduced in 2010.

Something interesting about the 2024 4Runner is that we might be seeing a hybrid version of it. Even though the 2.4-liter four-banger will be more powerful than the 4runner’s old V6, the new engine is not yet powerful enough to beat the competition’s off-road trims in battle. If you look at the 2023 Jeep Wrangler, it currently offers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, all of which come from a 2.0-liter hybrid engine. So, to make it level with this, Toyota might most likely include a hybrid powertrain in the 2024 4Runner redesign.
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner redesign should come with at least the current system on the Tacoma, which is a 6-speed manual transmission. In addition, Toyota may decide to elevate the 2024 4Runner beyond the current Highlander’s 8-speed automatic transmission and go for the new 10-speed ECT-I, which is being used by the 2023 Tundra and Sequoia.
When you go to the interior, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner might decide to retire the analog instrument cluster.
If the 2024 Toyota 4Runner were to come with all these specs, then we might just see a mid-size SUV that outranks all the others.
