Today we’ll look at 5 reasons why the relationship between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth is still so popular after all these years. I’ll use the 2005 Pride and Prejudice film, my favorite, to illustrate some points.

At the film's start, Lizzie is nonchalant as her sisters wish to be swept away by a wealthy man. Jane even tells her, “One day Lizzie, someone will catch your eye and then you will have to bite your tongue.”Literally seconds later, Mr Darcy enters and they play into this so well by capturing the way Elizabeth and Darcy do a double take.

I’ve watched this film so many times and the more I watch it, I seem to pick up on the many times that Darcy's eyes find Elizabeth and even though she tries to play it classy, she can’t help her eyes move towards him. It’s beautifully set up because it seems that for a large part of the film, they try to bounce their eyes so that they don’t connect with each other, however, in the end, they stare right into each other's souls.

Chapters:
00:00 Mr. Darcy's Declaration of Love
00:30 2005 Pride and Prejudice
00:45 What Elizabeth resists persists
01:45 Mr. Darcy's hand flex + other moments that build connection
03:12 Mr. Darcy's introverted personality compared to Elizabeth's
05:18 Brutal Honesty
06:26 Why their relationship is romantic
07:29 Slow-burn romance recommendation

Were you also taken by how similar yet different their personalities were? They’re both stubborn. Elizabeth speaks to this when she tries to convince her father why she and Darcy should marry. However, where Elizabeth can walk into a room and feel right at home, Darcy struggles. “I Do Not Have The Talent Of Conversing Easily With People I Have Never Met Before.”

He’s introverted, and this could be confused with him being standoffish. But the poor guy, he’s lost his parents, and he’s inherited an enormous responsibility of looking after his sister and fighting off men who try to court her for the wrong reasons.

The point is, his personality is very different from hers. But here’s what makes his character alluring.

He puts himself out there for her. He gets on the dance floor for her, he makes small talk for her, and that’s just the small ways in which he gets out of his comfort zone.

We won't even get into his big gestures- but the beauty of this relationship is that he doesn’t expect a woman to conform to his standards. Instead, he accepts Jane for who she is and he bravely takes down his walls so that he turns into the type of man that lets Jane shine.

Not someone who dims her light. That’s beautiful.

Let me know in the comments about some of the reasons why you think Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's love story in Pride and Prejudice is still so popular.
