On this day (January 2021), I paid a $63 parking ticket with pennies in Los Angeles, California. The parking violation was for a no parking zone. I received this ticket last year in December (2020), during a hiking adventure called Echo Mountain and Observation Point. Despite the LA County Shutdown, there were plenty of hikers that morning and street parking was at full capacity. Eager to explore my hike, I was able to find parking behind another vehicle and was on my way. After my hike was finished, unbeknownst to me, I received a ticket and realized there was a sign. What can you do…? I believe the ticket is excessive and if it was cheaper, I would have no issue paying right away. Although, I think a neighbor called the LA County Sheriff based on when I started the hike and when I received the parking violation an hour or so later. With the Coronavirus, I’m little surprise during the pandemic (COVID-19), parking citations are still being issued and with the amount of individuals paying off debt at one of the four locations in Los Angeles (Downtown, Mid-Wilshire, Van Nuys, and West Los Angeles). I witness a lot of people frustrations on how the system is ran, particularly during these tough times with individuals not working and businesses being shut down because of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Can’t Pay Now?
If you cannot pay your parking ticket now, LADOT has two options for you.

1.) Community Assistance Parking Program:
The Community Assistance Parking Program (CAPP) was created to assist homeless individuals with open or unpaid parking citations, by allowing him/her to pay in the form of community service. The Los Angeles City Council authorized the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to establish CAPP on February 14, 2017. Participants of CAPP must provide a proof of completion form to the City of Los Angeles upon completion of service hours. To estimate how many hours are required for a fine click here. For more information email us at [email protected] or call (213) 978-4400.

2.) Request an Installment Payment Plan:
Payment plans are available for citizens whose financial situation qualifies them as a very low-income household, using guidelines established by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This IPP does NOT cancel your fine. Once approved it simply allows the total amount due to be paid in installments over a 3-month period (a first installment of 40% of the total due, followed by two installments of 30% of the total).
You will be required to provide detailed income information as part of your IPP request. The Parking Violations Bureau will consider all forms of income, while determining your eligibility for an IPP.

Request an IPP by phone:
