If you’re in the market for a light-sized hatchback, your options are fewer and more expensive than they’ve probably ever been, but there are still some solid options if you prefer a traditional compact car over an SUV.

Among the best of them is the relatively new 2022 Toyota Yaris SX Hybrid, which sits near the top of the pint-size Japanese hatch range and brings bold design, bright paint colours and super-frugal efficiency.

On the other hand, there’s the facelifted 2022 Volkswagen Polo Life, which is the entry-level version of the German brand’s city-hatch and takes a more understated approach for almost $1000 less.
