Did you know that the ocean plays a key role in Sydney’s drinking water supply?

Desalination is the process of removing salt and impurities from seawater to produce drinking water. The Sydney Desalination Plant takes seawater from about 300m offshore and uses a reverse osmosis process to produce up to 15% of Sydney’s drinking water.

As our only major source of drinking water that doesn’t rely on rainfall, the Desal Plant helps us to meet Greater Sydney’s water demand against the effects of climate change, natural disasters and a growing population.
