"The speaker has ‘painted’ the beautiful youth with his eyes, and keeps the resulting painting in his ‘bosom’. The youth’s eyes, in return, beam light into the speaker’s breast. But no painting can faithfully reflect its subject’s heart.
Sonnet 24 enjoys the paradox between privacy and display—the inner place where the picture of the youth is stored is also a painter’s workshop & the curious might peer through the windows for a glimpse of his beauty."
