LFP battery also called lifepo4 battery or lithium iron phosphate battery for e bikes and electric scooters is kind of lithium ion battery where they have iron based cathode instead of Nickel based. Since Iron is found in abundance, it is easier to cheaper to produce these batteries as compared to their counterparts Lithium Ion NMC Battery.

What makes LFP Battery suitable for Electric scooters in India ?
LFP battery are generally low cost batteries as they use iron instead of nickel as cathode in production. They have long lifecycle, i.e, greater than 3000 charging cycles as compared to Lithium ion NMC Chemistry based batteries.

Features of LFP Battery:
1) Low cost as compared to lithium ion NMC chemistry counterpart
2) Low energy density, i.e, it requires more space to save same energy
3) More charging cycle hence greater life.
4) Less prone of fire as seen in lithium ion batteries of electric scooter
5) Does not have thermal runaways

Why LFP Battery failed for E bikes and electric scooters in India despite being cheap ?
LFP Battery although being cheap require 2X more size, hence space in electric scooter to provide same range as compared to lithium ion. Because of their size their weight also increases which results in decrease of e bike range per charge. The maintenance of battery is also more difficult as it is difficult to provide the state of charge of battery at any given point which misleads the customer before beginning of their ride. Also since these batteries require regular charging, if customer does not drives the vehicle everyday, it becomes a hassle for customer. Although the life of battery is higher than lithium ion batteries, but the maintenance if more difficult and cumbersome.

Should you buy LFP Batteries for your E bike ?
LFP Battery are yet in very early stages of their development. Because of the maintenance downside of the battery, it is not worth the money you spend still. However with daily new advancements in battery, LFP can become the future of electric scooter industry. But before that we need to see the reduction in size and capacity of the battery for it to become a success. Currently Lithium Ion NMC Chemistry is still the best choice of battery for electric scooters.

What is the price of LFP Battery for electric scooters in India?
Price of LFP battery is currently comparable to lithium ion batteries in the market because of low demand and supply. Supply chain is yet not fully developed. However we expect to see reduction in price soon.

Having narrow bandwidth of voltage range its difficult to exactly know battery percentage of and LFP battery so its very important that LFP battery have proper SOC i.e State Of Charge of an battery.
