Sergeant Major John Thompson completed his military service and at that time was the United Kingdom's most highly decorated Royal Marine.  

Recipient of the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) as well as having been Mentioned in Dispatches, John Thompson experienced extensive combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross is the UK's second highest award for bravery in the face of the enemy.

Darren talks to John about the incident in Helmand Province that saw him face numerous instances of combat with the Taliban and how his actions were deemed to have saved the lives of his comrades on more than one occasion.  In one instance, on 10th January 2007, his Company of Marines were ambushed in the town of Habibolla Kalay which resulted in a four hour long battle deep inside Taliban territory.  He engaged the enemy, at times within 50 meters, despite the obvious dangers to himself, as his vehicle was hit by numerous enemy rounds and RPGs exploded close by.  Running low on ammunition and without any regard whatsoever for his own safety he stayed in the killing area and allowed his comrades to get to safety.
