Much is written about life as an undergraduate at Oxford but what is it really like? As Oxford Mathematics's new first-year students arrive (273 of them, comprising 33 nationalities) we thought we would take the opportunity to go behind the scenes and share some of their experiences.

Our starting point is a first week lecture for the first year students. In this case the second lecture from 'An Introduction to Complex Numbers' by Dr. Vicky Neale. The lecture aims to both consolidate what has already been learnt at school and prepare students for the next stage. All first and second year lectures are followed by tutorials where students meet their tutor to go through the lecture and associated problem sheet and to talk and think more about the maths. Third and fourth year lectures are followed by classes.
