Salinas Valley Health is increasing efficiency and dramatically cutting wait times in the ER. We started seeing bigger numbers and sicker patients -- so we need the room, the equipment to be able to see those patients and give them the highest care that we can give them. June 2009 we implemented what we call split flow -- and that's where we try to put the patient where they really need to go, and that's in front of the doctor as soon as possible. So now we'll do a limited triage on you, put you in a room, provider will see you, and if x-ray is not ready for you, you don't own that bed, we'll put you in the results waiting room, until x-ray is ready for you. So we've really created this virtual space. Prior to split flow it took us well over an hour to get patients into a bed, but now it takes 15 to 20 minutes.
