2025 First Look McLaren Artura Spider - High Performance Hybrid Convertible

The second Artura model and the company's first-ever convertible with a high-performance hybrid drivetrain are unveiled by McLaren as the Artura Spider. With major improvements to power, performance, and driver involvement, the new Spider brings a spectacular new dimension to the Artura, combining with the sensory delights of open-top driving.

The V6 combustion engine in the MY25 Artura has been rebalanced to add 20 PS to McLaren's high-performance hybrid powertrain, bringing total output to 700 PS. The extra power is concentrated between 4,000 and 8,500 rpm, which produces a noticeable "crescendo" in the performance. The peak torque value is still a powerful 720 Nm, and little adjustments to the computerized mapping optimize its delivery. Current Artura owners will also be eligible for a complimentary engine recalibration through local McLaren Retailer.

With a displacement of just 160 kg, the 3.0-liter dry-sump aluminum petrol engine of the M630 is incredibly lightweight and compact. Its shorter length and lower weight compared to the McLaren V8 further improve packaging economy. The engine produces more than 200 PS per liter. The design's 120-degree V angle, which also helps with a low center of gravity, allows for the proportions. Because of the engine's architecture, there are less pressure losses through the exhaust system, which permits a harder crankshaft and an 8,500 rpm rev limit. The V6 engine's ability to rev freely is facilitated by the twin turbochargers' placement within the "hot vee," which allows them to spin more quickly and enhance throttle responsiveness.

With a modified valved exhaust system that includes a tuned resonator and upward conical shape to the tailpipes to further refine the engine note at the middle and higher regions of the rev range, the engine's soundscape has also been improved. The sound that results is "cleaner," enveloping the occupants. With an exhaust symposer that projects real sound waves from the tailpipe into the cabin, the optional sports exhaust system provides an improved, clearer tone overall and even more driver engagement.

An incredibly small axial flux E-motor complements the Artura V6's power and response. It is housed within the bell housing of the transmission and produces 95PS and 225Nm. Its power density per kilogramme is 33% higher than that of the system found in the renowned McLaren P1 hypercar.

Five lithium-ion modules make up the battery pack that powers the E-motor; it has a 7.4kWh usable energy capacity and an extended EV range of 33 km (21 miles). The assembly, which includes a power distribution unit that moves battery power from the back of the car to the ancillaries up front, is supported by a solid carbon fiber floor and uses cooling rails to cool the battery. The rear base of the monocoque is then coupled with this component, which maximizes crash protection, weight distribution, and stiffness.

The 88 kg battery pack and 15.4 kilogram E-motor together make up the small hybrid system of the Artura, which contributes just 130 kg to the total weight. This accomplishment is crucial to the new Spider's best-in-class weight results.
