Reviewing the best compact smartphones in 2023, including favourites like Google's Pixel 7a and Samsung's Galaxy S23. These greatest small phones also feature mini foldable phones like the Oppo Find N2 Flip and Motorola RAZR 40 Ultra. Compact they may be, but small smartphones like the Asus Zenfone 10 still boast solid specs, dependable camera tech, great battery life and flagship specs. And it's not all Android, either: we also have some love for the last mini iPhone!

The most recent releases in the UK include the diminutive Zenfone 10, which still somehow delivers all-day play on a single charge. Its camera tech isn't up to the Pixel 7 and 7a standards, but Asus' mini mobile is still one of the best of 2023.

Other notable small phones right now include Samsung's Galaxy S23, the Moto Edge Neo and Sony's Xperia 5 IV. The Samsung S23 in particular is one of the greatest new flagships of the year, with Snapdragon performance and much improved battery life.

For a budget, you have the Pixel 7a and Motorola Neo. Or alternatively, if you're stacked with cash, check out the Moto RAZR 40 Ultra and Oppo's Find N2 Flip. These are some of my favourite foldables in 2023, offering a compact design with a slick Android experience.

If you're more of an iOS fan, check out the iPhone 13 Mini. Apple's small phone is still easy to use with one mitt despite that brick-like design. Just don't get the iPhone SE whatever you do. Personally I prefer Sony's Xperia 5 IV, which sports a notch-free 21:9 display, pro camera tech, and some great media smarts.
