▶️Gate valves are linear motion valves. They are multi-turn type valves as the actuator requires numerous turns to change from the fully open to fully closed position. Linear motion valves are slower to operate than rotary motion valves, but this is beneficial in some instances because this trait helps avoid water hammer when opening the valve.

Gate valves are usually installed with in-line piping that requires very little obstruction to flow. When the gate valve is fully open, there is a very low pressure drop across the valve.

The gate valve bonnet allows easy access to the internal valve components. The internal valve components are referred to as the ‘trim’.

Gate valve discs are either of the inclined or parallel design. Three inclined disc designs are used, these are the solid, split and flexible wedge designs.

Gate valve seats are machined directly into the body, or, seat rings are used. Seat rings can be attached to the valve using a screw thread.

Gate valves utilise either a rising or non-rising stem design.

In service temperatures are between approximately -20 to 60 °C. In service pressure can be up to 16 bar. The maximum flow through the valve is between 5-20 metres per second depending upon if the flowing medium is a liquid or gas.
