As the world remains locked away during quarantine, I've struggled to connect with pop music. A deeper, more spiritual refinement has sought something less fast-paced and stimulated and more reflective and emotive. Upon first listen, I passed over #SamSmith's newest single #ToDieFor, coupling it with the same passivity I've processed most 2020 pop songs, but upon watching the #musicvideo, I ate my words like I've been doing all the carbs this month. Finally, pop provoked a frequency more in tune with the vibrations of the current world. "To Die For" is sad, reflective, and unsettling, capturing the lonely call of a hopeless romantic. I'd consider this the most human mainstream release of 2020 thus far. Though Sam Smith's voice can sit a bit high for my personal vocal liking, I knew I needed to sing this song, and instead of compromising his product and lowering the key, I thought the deal with the discomfort and float light and airy like the song requires. Though I'm missing the#DonnieDarko quote in the beginning (maybe the best part of the song), I'm quite satisfied with the end result. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
