It's important to have a flat surface when doing a wheel alignment, and even when using something that seems flat like your driveway or garage floor, often for the purposes of drainage things are generally not as level as you'd want them to be.

It is easy to test and shim your setup to account for this however, and as Tim discusses while it doesn't need to be a perfectly level calibrated flat patch, you do need to spend a small amount of time making sure your setup isn't too coarse in order to get the best results. Once you have done this a few times, it all becomes much quicker and easier, especially if you are using the same location.
