Today at Florio Cafe we will discuss an important subject that concerns Shakespeare, Samuel Daniel and JOHN FLORIO

Evidence indicates that Shakespeare may have used a scribal version of Samuel Daniel’s "The Civil Wars", rather than the first printed edition, while writing "Richard II". There are two extant manuscripts of portions of Daniel’s epic poem. A never-printed stanza in one manuscript employs imagery similar to Shakespeare’s to describe the same invented episode.

David Weiss valuates the shared imagery, and considers how Shakespeare’s possible use of a manuscript impacts the dating of "Richard II".

He also identifies social connections between the authors that explain how the playwright could have obtained access to an early version of the poet’s work.

David S. Weiss is a part-time instructor of English at Georgia Gwinnett College. He earned his PhD in English literature from the University of Birmingham in the UK and the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-Upon-Avon after retiring as the CFO of a Fortune 1000 company.  His doctoral dissertation reassesses the relationship between the works of William Shakespeare and Samuel Daniel.  He has an MBA from the Wharton School and undergraduate degrees in accounting and English from the University of Pennsylvania.  Dr. Weiss seeks to share his unique combination of literary expertise and business experience with young people to demonstrate that the analytical and communication skills developed through the study of English literature are critical to their professional success regardless of the careers they choose.
