Toyota makes the mistake of calling the Drive Modes and Operating Modes, MODES. We need to distinguish between the two and what they really mean. This video breaks it all down in a FUN way to help you understand why a Toyota software programmer is retired drinking Mai Tai's and Pina Colada's in the Bahamas!

The Toyota Prius Prime has three DRIVE MODES which operate with all the operating techniques. They are:
- ECO Mode, most fuel efficient, regulates air conditioning for fuel economy
- NORMAL Mode, perfect for driving around town where a bit more power is needed and fuel economy can be less
- PWR Mode, needed for very fast acceleration such as merging with traffic

In addition to the three drive modes the Toyota Prius Prime has four gas/electric-battery techniques for fuel consumption and economy. The three modes can be used interchangeably with these techniques.
- EV Technique/Mode will attempt to use the electric-battery 100% of the journey for 25+ miles until the battery is depleted.
- EV Auto Technique/Mode will also attempt to use the electric-battery but will switch over to gas when situations demand.
- HV Technique/Mode is what I call the Prius mode. Just like a non-EV Prius it uses the gas/electric-battery combination to power the car.
- Charge Technique/Mode is a special HV option that uses the gas engine to charge up the battery while the vehicle is sitting still or while driving.
