Donald Trump's attitude to the war in Ukraine and his stance on the Nato alliance could cause the UK and Europe major problems, his former national security adviser John Bolton has warned.

Mr Bolton believes that Mr Trump genuinely wants “to get out of Nato”, and isn’t simply bluffing to convince European partners to spend more on defence.

“Withdrawing from Nato is very likely in a second Trump term,” he said.
The veteran Republican consultant has become a prominent critic of his party’s likely presidential nominee, following an acrimonious departure from the Trump administration in September 2019.

Mr Bolton says that throughout his time working for Mr Trump, his actions were “not what I think normal people do”.

This includes being childishly distracted and fixated by unusual, improper or irrelevant matters, he explains.

He also remembers Mr Trump’s trip to Europe in 2018, when he was due to attend a Nato summit, meet with then-UK prime minister Theresa May, and finally hold talks with Mr Putin in Helsinki.

Before embarking on his flight, he told the press: “Frankly, Putin may be the easiest of them all. Who would think?”

Mr Bolton says bluntly: “The answer is nobody, except Donald Trump.”
