This short video presents the Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W), an indicator developed by FAO and partners to fill the need for a low-cost food-based metric for assessing dietary diversity as an important aspect of diet quality. MDD-W reflects dietary diversity in a population by measuring the proportion of women of reproductive age who ate five or more out of ten food groups the previous day. The higher percentage of women eating more than five food groups, the greater the likelihood that women’s diets contain sufficient micronutrients. MDD-W can be used to evaluate the impact of programmes, inform policies and set targets.
