2025 Mini Countryman JCW: A Feast of Fun

Mini's iconic John Cooper Works (JCW) trim injects an extra dose of excitement into the 2025 Countryman, the largest Mini ever produced. The new generation, though expanded in size, retains the brand's signature playfulness and driving enjoyment. Our encounter with the 312-hp John Cooper Works variant in Portugal affirmed that, despite its increased dimensions, the Countryman remains a delight on the road.

Under the hood, a revised turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine, known as the B48A20T2, takes center stage. Featuring a redesigned cylinder head employing the Miller cycle, along with updated intake ports and combustion chambers, this powerplant delivers 11 more horsepower than its predecessor. The peak power, achieved 750 rpm later, sustains through the 6500-rpm redline. While torque experiences a slight dip, the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission efficiently channels power to the wheels, replacing the previous torque-convertor eight-speed automatic.

Performance Unleashed

The driving experience in the Countryman JCW is characterized by a snappy and responsive performance, especially noticeable during downshifts. The dual-clutch transmission, equipped with Boost mode for an intense 10-second burst of aggressive driving settings, adds a layer of excitement to the journey. The artificial exhaust notes accompanying the Go-Kart drive mode contribute to the auditory drama, although it's a manufactured soundtrack.

Despite the growth in size to align with the redesigned BMW X1, the Countryman JCW maintains its agility. The longer wheelbase and JCW-tuned Adaptive M suspension ensure a comfortable yet dynamic ride. The elimination of run-flat tires, replaced with slightly wider tire options ranging from 17 to 20 inches, enhances ride quality. The JCW variant we tested featured Pirelli P Zero PZ4 245/45R-20 tires on JCW Flag Spoke wheels, presenting an appealing visual package.

However, the steering, while allowing for aggressive maneuvers, lacks the expected tactility and direct feel. The Countryman JCW's 8.0 inches of ground clearance, an increase of 1.5 inches, aligns with its commitment to both performance and practicality.

Jingle Jangle Interior

Inside the cabin, the Countryman JCW maintains Mini's tradition of infusing fun into the driving experience. The 9.4-inch round OLED touchscreen serves as the hub for the infotainment system, replacing the previous screen behind the steering wheel. The eight drive modes, each with distinctive themes, offer a playful touch to the driving dynamics, complemented by corresponding jingles.

However, the software occasionally struggles to keep up, leading to instances of lag in the navigation system. Physical buttons for essential functions, including drive modes and volume control, provide a welcome alternative.

The interior design showcases Mini's commitment to a lively atmosphere, with customizable exterior lighting themes and attention to detail. While the upper dashboard boasts quality materials, the lower section features glossy plastic, and storage options in the center console are limited.

Price to Savor

The Countryman JCW's pricing might induce a moment of hesitation, starting at $47,895. While it positions itself as a premium offering, comparisons with competitors such as the BMW X1 M35i xDrive and the Mercedes-AMG GLA35 reveal a nuanced decision for buyers. Additional equipment packages can elevate the price, but even with these considerations, the JCW presents a compelling option in the luxury subcompact segment.

In conclusion, the 2025 Mini Countryman JCW successfully marries size with spirited performance, offering a unique proposition in the market. The blend of style, power, and driving enjoyment makes it a standout choice for those seeking a distinct and enjoyable driving experience.
