North Carolina vintage Caterpillar collector Erik Christenbury found and restored this 1962 D6 B that was converted from tracks to wheels for use by U.S. Sugar.
The tractors got the nickname “Sugar Baby” because they were used to haul wagons filled with cane from the fields to U.S. Sugar mills during the 1950s-60s.
Christenbury traces his DW6 to Clewiston Motor Company, now Kelly Caterpillar, in Florida. The company won contracts with U.S. Sugar to convert the D6s from tracks to wheels. It is estimated about 150 of them were made for U.S. Sugar.
In the video above, Christenbury demonstrates his 1962 “Sugar Baby” DW6 B, which looks like a big skid steer and sounds like an airplane.
