You didn’t have to grow up in the 90s to appreciate the peek behind the curtain that a clear phone case will get you – but until recently, you did need a lot of do-it-yourself patience to make your mobile phone transparent. But in the otherwise relentless dumpster fire that is 2020, there is one bright point: some manufacturers are actually having fun with their hardware again. Earlier in the year Nubia unveiled its RedMagic 5G gaming phone, a device I photographed for the Instagram channel because it sported the most striking paint job I’ve seen in a very long time. And today, that same phone is back in the studio with a new transparent backplate that showcases its halo feature: a 15,000 rpm cooling fan. It's not destined for US shores and doesn't have software complete enough for this market to make a full review possible – but that doesn't mean we can't have a little fun.
