Promising research using a brain-computer hook-up could someday allow speech-disabled people to have a normal conversation. The Stanford Medicine study involved brain implants that transmit signals to computer system which interpret and translate neural activity into words on a screen. The results could lead to development of a device that helps those who lost their ability to speak to communicate at the normal rate of speech.

Frank Willet, PhD is a Research Scientist with Neural Prosthetics Translational Laboratory at Stanford Medicine.

Jaimie Henderson, MD is a Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford Medicine.
