Narrators may seem to spark a distant memory of a middle school Shakespeare class, and they are often associated with literary works, theatre productions, and web videos. They have, however, since evolved to be fixtures in some critically acclaimed television series. For example, shows like How I Met Your Mother, The Mindy Project, and 13 Reasons Why utilised narration for much more than just storytelling frameworks. These characters were the audience's guide to understanding the ins and outs of a series. They provided all the gossip, insight, and explanations needed to understand a show.

There are many different types of narration styles, such as posthumous, interactive, and nostalgic. Each style impacts a series differently. Though they share commonalities of moving the plot along and providing glimpses into a character's inner dialogue, they can change the tone, highlight different moments, or make a scene more memorable. They become essential to the show's structure and the bridge between the series and the audience. These styles provide a glimpse into the irreplaceable narrators that make a show uniquely their own, and it just would not be the same without them.
