Background

On April 25, 2015, Nepal experienced an earthquake that has, and continues to take an immense toll on the country and its people. Nepal's recovery faces unique challenges on the ground due to its inaccessible geography, and tumultuous political and economic climate. The Gurung Society, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit is holding a benefit to utilize our unique position as an experienced organization with deep personal and professional connections to the region. The Gurung Society has previously led fundraising initiatives for natural disasters such as the Haiti Earthquake in 2010 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

The Event

We are hosting an event on May 16th from 8:00PM - 10:30PM, in the Tishman Auditorium at the New School in New York City to help raise funds and celebrate Nepal's rich culture. Featuring renowned Nepali and international artists, this night will bring together a diverse community to support Nepal. The benefit is focused on serving the hardest hit villages near the quake's epicenter. While the damage in Kathmandu is striking, many rural communities do not have the resources or networks available to adequately rebuild. It is our mission to direct funds to rural villages most in need of assistance.

The Impact

Your contributions will be used to help rebuild schools, health posts, and community centers. The Gurung Society's steering committee will direct funds, and partner with local organizations such as Adhikaar and Nepal Trust, along with other worthy local organizations.

The Gurung Society's strength lies in our personal connection and extensive network in these areas. We represent the immigrant population of the Gurung people, one of Nepal's many ethnic groups in the greater New York City area. As an organization with previous fundraising experience we are uniquely equipped to directly and responsibly manage this effort.
