My old Harbor Freight splitter was never very good, but now it has a blown cylinder, a bent beam, and the engine doesn't run right. Should I scrap it? Instead I modify it to work on my excavator, and the results are MUCH BETTER than I could have hoped for.

This is not a new idea. There are many companies that sell log splitters for excavators, and many of them have features that are nicer than mine. Some split both directions, they are more compact sideways, better protection for the cylinder and hoses, etc. I wish I could claim the idea and patent it, but I'm waaay too late for that!
