Twenty years too late. As good as mid-sized family sedans have become, and as ideal-for-Canadian-needs as those with all-wheel drivetrains are, Clayton, I fear their time to shine has passed, such has become consumers’ overwhelming desire for crossovers and SUVs of all sizes, shapes and price. A damn shame, really.
But, just in case I’m being overly pessimistic, we have a pair of decently priced, AWD family four-doors from two manufacturers not yet ready to concede the inevitable. Not only that, but one, Kia’s K5, is brand-new for 2021, a replacement for the aged Optima. And we’re stacking it against Toyota’s established Camry, a name that needs no explanation but gets one anyway, the company determining last year there was sufficient market interest for a non-luxury AWD passenger car to warrant another crack — after a 29-year absence — at representing the segment.
