Lighthouses have played a vital role in the maritime history of Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia's rocky coastline, many islands, and treacherous waters made navigation perilous for ships and sailors.

The first lighthouse in Nova Scotia and all of Canada was built at Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island.

Construction started around 1730 and completed around 1734.

Sambro Island Lighthouse is the oldest standing and operating lighthouse in the province and in all of the Americas.

The interior granite tower, is the original build of 1758.

There is no older working light in The Americas and it has stood guard off Halifax for over 250 years.

One of the most famous lighthouses in Nova Scotia is the Peggy's Point Lighthouse, which was built around 1915 and is located on a rocky outcrop near the fishing village of Peggy's Cove.

It has become an iconic symbol of Nova Scotia and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.

Light keepers were responsible for maintaining the lights and assisting ships in distress in the early days.

These keepers lived at the lighthouses often with their families and had to endure long periods of isolation and harsh weather conditions.

As technology advanced, the province switched away from keepers to automation, with all now being automated in Nova Scotia.

When visiting Nova Scotia be sure to get out and explore the over 100 unique lighthouses that can be seen scattered along the thousands of kilometres of rugged coastline.

Today, many of Nova Scotia's lighthouses still operate and others have also been preserved and protected, serving as a reminder of the province's rich maritime history.
