Natural materials are fundamentally different from man-made materials. The first are sourced from nature, while the latter are sourced from a scientific laboratory. Nature materials generally comprise hard and soft phases arranged in complex hierarchical architectures, with characteristic dimensions spanning from the nanoscale to the macroscale. The resulting materials are lightweight and often display unique combinations of strength and toughness, but have proven difficult to mimic synthetically. At RMIT we use modern 3D printing technology to mimick nature materials with at objective to create lighter and stronger engineering materials. Research is performed by Dr Jonathan Tran and Mr Chenxi Peng (PhD student) at RMIT University.
