10 adaptations Cobra Kai made to The Karate Kid

Back in 2018, when fans of the 1980’s classic movie The Karate Kid heard that a series was being developed that would expand on the lives of the characters thirty four years after the events of the movie, some were skeptical! We wondered just how they were going to be able to recapture the magic of the first movie, and hopeful that it wasn’t just going to be a ton of throwbacks and referential jokes about Karate Kid. And lucky for us, they did none of the above, and Cobra Kai is an awesomely original show that really brought Karate Kid into the 21st century. But in order to make the show as great as it is, the filmmakers had to make some big changes to the story, in order to help us understand where the characters are in their lives now. One of the biggest changes is, of course, the fact that the show follows Johnny, the antagonist from the original movie, instead of Daniel, the hero. And while it might seem like that would be a bad idea, it has allowed them to make a much more complex and realistic world, in which no one is really “bad” or “good,” they are just people. They also added never-before-seen footage from the original movie, gave us details about the movie that we never knew, explored relationships in ways that Karate Kid never did, and updated the world in order to create something full of nostalgia, but somehow totally original.
