Myanmar has been in a state of civil war since last October. Various ethnic groups have taken up arms and joined a rebel alliance against the ruling military junta. Myanmar's junta took control after a coup in 2021. But the rebel alliance is pushing the junta back. The rebels saw another victory against the junta this week. Karen forces captured the town of Myawaddy, near the Myanmar-Thailand border. Myawaddy is a crucial trade hub for the two countries. Myanmar's junta has launched a counteroffensive to try and recapture Myawaddy. Locals are afraid the junta may resort to airstrikes to retake the town. Thailand is getting thousands of fearful refugees from Myanmar every day. Bangkok has deployed troops to the border region, and has warned Myanmar's junta not to escalate the situation.
