Tracking rhinos in rocky terrain - a skill few possess!
In Episode 11 of Wild Namibia, viewers are introduced to the world of a master tracker and Rhino Ranger, Hans !Haoseb, affectionately known as Ou Wit. For over two decades, he has dedicated his life to protecting wildlife in the remote North West of Namibia, specializing in rhino tracking as part of the Rhino Ranger Program. Our camera team struggled to keep up with his daily routine, which involves being out and about, tracking rhinos through the rocky and inhospitable terrain of Damaraland.
In this episode, naturalist Johann Cloete guides us through the real-life rhino tracking skills of the Save the Rhino Trust ranger team in Damaraland. Director of Field Operations, Lesley Karutjaiva, explains how the trackers are able to follow any spoor over the rocky terrain, a super skill that only a few humans possess. Viewers will also get a chance to learn about a rhino rubbing post in Damaraland, and witness the transfer of skills from experienced trackers like Hans !Haoseb to the next generation of young trackers, such as Jesayas Nuab.
Join us on this insightful journey as we uncover the secrets of rhino tracking in the rocky North-West of Namibia, and discover what it takes to be on a tracking team. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to witness the skill and dedication of the Rhino Rangers in their quest to protect these magnificent animals.
