Written for the October composing contest put on by Ryan Leach & friends. This is my attempt at an orchestral composition that captures the spirit of Lorenzo Lanfranconi’s illustration “The Dudj Brothers”. I saw two mischievous brothers on a chill wintery day, running through the woods with crops stolen from their uncle Bean. So I tried for something fundamentally playful, but still evocative of a chilly wind blowing through, and with some light moments of suspense and even some danger.

The “score” (and I use the term loosely) was done in Dorico and what you are hearing is actually playback (very lightly mixed) direct from notation, as rendered by the Noteperformer Playback Engine (NPPE) for VSL’s Synchron libs. This is the first time I’ve used the Synchron playback engine in Noteperformer, and I’m very impressed by how well it rendered this composition. If I had done a full mockup myself, I’m not sure that it would have turned out much better… but I am very sure it would have taken me many hours. The notation supports the playback, in case you are wondering why there are so many dynamics markings and such crazy swings of dynamics indicated in the “score”. ;-)
